Metroid launched on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1986, created by Nintendo R&D1. It joined that early group of NES titles that aimed bigger than simple arcade conversions, offering a world you could explore at your own pace. Instead of completing a stage and moving on, the game pushed you to dig deeper into an entire alien planet.

You play as Samus Aran, a bounty hunter equipped with an adaptable power suit, sent to prevent the Space Pirates from using the dangerous Metroid organisms as weapons. Exploration drives everything: you advance through tunnels and caverns one screen at a time, only to find your route blocked until you uncover a new upgrade, such as the Morph Ball for tight passages or missiles to break sealed doors. The challenge is steep, and the game gives little guidance, forcing you to retrace old areas whenever you gain new abilities. It creates a lonely, tense atmosphere, making every step feel like survival on an unfriendly world.
